Infusion/Lab registered nurse will directly responsible for providing longitudinal comprehensive care to medical oncology and hematology patients. It has primary responsibility for the coordination of care, patient and caregiver education, plan of care formulation and documentation, and nursing management of patients receiving care in the medical oncology infusion clinic. This care management includes patient assessment, symptom management, vascular access mangement, and administration of parenteral fluids, chemotherapy agents, biologic therapy, and supportive care medications. Provides longitudinal comprehensive nursing care to oncology/hematology patients. Has primary nursing responsibility for the coordination of the care and monitoring the status of a specific population of patients. Has responsibility for the education of patients and family. Acts as primary point of contact for patients, working collaboratively with their physicians.
Perform phlebotomy, IV insertion, accessing central venous catheters, and basic management of central venous catheter dressings IAW SCCA Policies and Procedures

Perform basic management and accessing port-a-cath (implanted port) in accordance with established SCCA Policies and Procedures

Collects, handles, and labels specimens in accordance with established SCCA Policies and Procedures

Perform nursing assessment prior to each infusion, review relevant lab results, pain assessment and other symptoms.

Assure the safety of patients by following all procedures related to verification of orders and products when administering chemotherapy and blood products.

Demonstrate an awareness of the potentially hazardous nature of many of the agents administered and uses correct precautions when handling them.

Follow all procedures regarding safe disposal of any materials used in the administration of chemotherapy or other toxic agents and blood products.

Communicate patient symptoms including complaints presented upon arrival to the case manager or team nurse.

Request consultation from social work, dietitian or pastoral care staff when patient's situation indicates.

Document all nursing care activities accurately and in a timely fashion.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights.

Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job in order to carry out the primary responsibilities.

Required:
Current Washington State nursing license.

Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years

Additional certification may be required dependent upon department.

Critical thinking; the ability to practice the cognitive skills of analyzing, applying standards, discriminating, information seeking, logical reasoning, predicting, and transforming knowledge

Ability to develop clinical judgment.

Time Management skills; the ability to organize and manage time and tasks independently

Ability to communicate effectively by looking and listening for cues, asking open-ended questions, exploring cues, using pauses, screening responses, and clarifying response.

Ability to effectively listen by using reflecting, acknowledging, summarizing, empathizing, and paraphrasing skill.

Ability to effectively provide information by checking what information the person knows already, giving small amounts of information at a time, using clear terms and avoiding jargon, avoiding detail unless it is requested, checking for understanding, and pausing and waiting for a response.

Preferred:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Two years of nursing experience

Outpatient Oncology experience

OCN (Oncology Certified Nurse) or BMT RN
